What is d2w?
D2W is an additive, making normal plastics biodegradable. The additive looks just like granules, and the plastic bags and other products made with it look just like normal products. The products which can be made with d2w technology include Shopper-bags, garbage sacks, bin liners, shrink wrap, pallet wrap, bubble wrap, food packaging, gloves, aprons etc.
What is d2w plastic?
In essence, it is biodegradable plastic. Plastic made with d2w looks and feels just like ordinary plastic and can be recycled just like any other plastic. But here’s the magic part, if it ends up in general waste or, even worse, released into the open environment, it will degrade and biodegrade!
How does d2w work?
d2w accelerates the natural process of oxidation until the product is no longer a plastic, but a material which can be bio-assimilated (i.e. used as a food source) by bacteria and fungi on land or sea. Best of all, if it escapes collection and ends up as litter in the environment, it will degrade and biodegrade in a continuous, irreversible and unstoppable process until there is nothing left, in the same way as nature’s waste. No toxic residues and no microplastics.
Check out below youtube video owned by Symphony, shows how a bag degrades over time, thanks to the unique additive d2w. d2w turns ordinary plastic at the end of its useful life into a material with a completely different molecular structure. At that stage it is no longer a plastic and has become a material which can be bio-assimilated in the open environment in the same way as a leaf.
Advantages of d2w technology
In terms of strength, aesthetics, flexibility and optical properties, d2w plastic looks and feels like ordinary plastic. So there is no special design limitations compare to normal plastic bags.
It is ncluded at the manufacturing stage, at only 1%. This means just little or no extra costs.
It is a drop-in technology, so normal plastic bag supplier can produce biodegradable plastic bags by using existed machine. No need to change production line.
It is SASO and ESMA approved. In accordance with Notices issued by SASO (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation), it is a mandatory requirement that all plastic products and/or plastic packaging Specified in the Regulation are to be made using approved oxo-biodegradable masterbatch, whether they are made in Saudi Arabia or exported to that country.Symphony Environmental Ltd, and our regional distributor (Eco-Polymers) have been awarded a SASO Quality Mark for our d2w masterbatch under License No: 1-000000002967867272858-1438. This means that we are able to supply oxo-biodegradable masterbatch now, for inclusion in plastic products for manufacture in, or export to, Saudi Arabia.
Unlike compostable plastic bags not suitable for plastic recycle, d2w can be recycled with conventional polymer and can be made with recyclate.
According to FDA & EU food contact regulations, d2w plastic is suitable for food contact.
